From “small kid time” I have always believed that I was destined to do something of great importance. 45-years later, I  am still trying to figure out what that might me, but I have faith in God and understand that he is priming me for action at the appointed time. One of God’s most difficult lessons to us is learning how to wait on him. So often we ask ourselves, “When God? When is it my time?”. As a parent, it’s the perennial question ”Is it soup yet?”. I’m still a child in so many ways. Everyday I try to find neoteny, so I can retain the wonder and simplicity that children evoke  – “And he said: “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven” Matthew 18:3 NIV.

In our day to day life, it’s challenging to remember that God designed each of us to be a marvel. Unique in our DNA, blessed with individual talents, a heart and mind created with a capacity for the most extraordinary. So often, it is easier to excuse ourselves from the road less traveled and take up residence in the town of Common & Ordinary. Today, take a moment to close your eyes and quite yourself. Let your mind drift and unlock the dreams God has set in your heart. Ask for his help in opening and closing doors. Let yourself be free and be the “me” God envisioned for you.

Lollipop dreams

I wrote this while watching my middle daughter at a volleyball game. I wanted to bottle her exuberance and joy! It occurred to me that in adulthood we lose our childhood joy and need to maintain neoteny.

I close my eyes and wonder why this life is the way it is
I try to find the things that remind me
of ice cream days and simpler days
I wonder if mistakes I made were lessons taught
or chances lost
not that I regret
for what I have today, I’m grateful for
still I drift to sleep desiring more
wondering if and when that magic door
will reveal to me my heart’s desires
to find my space
to give my heart
to grow my soul
into a spirit that soars into the heavens
this world wants you to grow up, too
but all the while losing you
so fast we push until one day
it’s all just slipped away
I close my eyes tonight and hold on to
lollipop dreams and puppy dog wishes
skipping stones and blowing kisses
the child inside, the adult in me waiting to blossom into the me I should be.

Your moment to live

My feelings on being present, ready, and available to life and the act of living.

To connect, one must be present.
To receive, one must be open.
To love, one must give. Today, is your moment to live.

Keep moving forward

I wrote this for the one I admire, respect, and lean on for advice and balance.

Giving up is not an option
tenacity, perseverance and the sheer will to succeed are paramount
on the road to personal satisfaction.

I wrote this following a disappointing conversation. I shared my disappointment with someone I look up to and tremendously respect.
He gently told me, “quitting is not an option”.

When your spirit lacks the strength to overcome
and this world has you weary and empty
grieve not of the failure you feel
but rejoice in the knowledge that you are alive
and that heaven smiles on your spirit
open your arms and embrace the warmth
let it wash you like a child
and fill your heart with renewed energy to begin the task again.

I wrote this after spending some time with a high profile celebrity.
This individual was down to earth, with a calm, peaceful spirit. We spent a great evening discussing culture, politics, religion, music, relationships, and life in general. It renewed my spirit to connect with someone whose view of the world was broad and bold.

From me to where you are, don’t think it’s very far
cause when I think of you, we’re both lookin’ at the moon
from the ocean in Gabon, where I am across the sea
the stars are all the same, God made it that way
some talk about the left, others walk to the far right
crazy as it seems, we won’t fix it over night
the future’s in our hands, tho’ we’re in a different place
the feelin’ is the same, God made it that way
some will say it’s human nature, some will say we’re lost
others try to throw the blame, on a past that’s gone and lost
but I can tell that you believe, I believe it too
together we can change, the future’s up to you.

Yes to the no

I wrote this rap after receiving an email from a mentor on the sales strategy of viewing “no” as part of the process to get to “yes”. I felt that “yes to the no” was really a part of each individual’s journey to achieve their personal best.

Yes to the no
go wit the flow
all the way around
what seems to bring you down
is really what cha need
to thrive n to succeed
yes to the no
yes to the no.

Ev’rywhere I go
people always say
to get ahead in life
you gotta get a “hey”
but I don’t really think
that’s what it’s all about
success is from within
it comes straight from the heart.

Yes to the no
go wit the flow
all the way around
what seems to bring you down
is really what cha need
to thrive n to succeed
yes to the no
yes to the no.

We’re always pushin for a “yes”
don’t really wanna hear a “no”
to fail is really sad
it breaks our joy and flow
what yah need to understand
“no” isn’t really what it seems
it’s the street we need to drive
on the road to our dreams.

Yes to the no
go wit the flow
all the way around
what seems to bring you down
is really what cha need
to thrive n to succeed
yes to the no yes to the no.
